Xovis APS-Series — transport & passenger counting sensors

Written by Vemco Support | Aug 19, 2026, 2:13:03 AM

The Xovis APS-Series (Automatic Passenger Counter) sensors are designed specifically for public transport — buses, trams, and trains. They are separate products from the PC/PF retail sensors and serve a different use case. APS sensors connect to Vemcount for transport analytics dashboards.

APS sensor models

APS-R

3D sensor suitable for all vehicle types (buses, trams, trains). PoE-powered or external 12–36VDC power supply.

APS-B

Compact design optimised specifically for buses. Lower profile for tight door installations.

APS-M (transport)

Latest generation APS sensor. FW 2.11 adds enhanced wheelchair detection, HUB Device Control integration, blocked-sensor notifications.

Key capabilities

Passenger counting

Bi-directional counting per door opening. ~50ms latency for real-time applications. Meets VDV 457-2 acceptance test standards.

Object classification

Distinguishes adults, children, wheelchairs, prams, and bicycles. License required (Object Classification licence pack).

Zone occupancy monitoring

Real-time monitoring of designated zones onboard — luggage areas, bike bays, standing areas. Included as standard feature.

Digital validation recordings

Records for remote comparison counting. Auto-deleted from device. Can upload to FTP. Validation Recording licence required.

Door event triggers

Counts only when door is open. Supports automatic start/stop detection, digital input, FMStoIP, or VehicleToIP as door event triggers.

Connectivity and protocols

All APS sensors support these protocols as standard (no extra cost): ITxPT, VDV-301 (IBIS-IP), VDV-300, MQTT(S), HTTP(S), FTP(S), SFTP, TCP, UDP, IPv6, IPv4, DHCP, RADIUS.

Door coding: 16 pre-configured positions. Start/Stop detection: no door contact required.

Compliance and certifications

  • Designed to EN50155 (railway electronic equipment)

  • EN45545-2 (fire protection on railways)

  • UN/ECE R10 (electromagnetic compatibility)

  • EU ePrivacy Seal awarded March 2026 — confirms compliance with GDPR and European data protection standards

What's new — APS firmware

FW 2.11 (Mar 2026)

Enhanced wheelchair detection. Blocked-sensor notifications. FTP test option. APS-RS Series can now connect to HUB Device Control.

FW 2.10 (Dec 2025)

RADIUS authentication. Configuration snapshots. Stroller classification improvements.

HUB Device Control compatibility

APS-B and APS-R sensors running FW 2.9+ are compatible with Xovis HUB Device Control. APS-RS Series gained HUB Device Control support in FW 2.11. This enables remote firmware updates, diagnostics, configuration snapshots, and fleet monitoring via hub.xovis.cloud.

Accessories (APS mounting)

Xovis provides specialised mounting hardware for vehicle installations: surface cover mount, straight surface mount bracket, variable tilt angle set, angled recessed bracket, flush mount set, and plane-recessed mount bracket. All designed for bus and rail installation environments.
